UX CASE STUDY

Kijiji is looking to create a new online presence. The purpose of this project is to enhance the user flow through the Post Ad process on their site and mobile interface.

Process Plan

Problem Statement

Kijiji is looking to increase the conversion rate so that fewer users drop in the middle of the Post Ad process. They are also looking to enhance the user’s flow to improve the quality and components of the advertisements submitted through the interface.

Business Assumptions

The biggest risk for Kijiji is losing their customers’ interest and attention during the Post Ad process. The current system is lengthy and complex. The Post ad flow consists of a long form for the user to fill out with text and mixed media information, automated suggestions to categorize the user’s ad, and a manual search feature through category cards.

User Assumptions

The users include people and business seeking and posting ads in a wide range of

categories: including cars, real estate, jobs, and items. The users use Kijiji’s website on a browser on their phone, computer, laptop, or tablet. Alternatively, they could also download and use the Kijiji app on Android or iPhone on their favourite device(s). The features they care most about are the Post Ad and Search functionality. Furthermore, key words found in Ad titles and high quality photos are also important. The users’ activity on this website is based on what products or services they seek or provide, if they’re paying customers, how often they need a buy & sell service, what their job or hobbies are, and what their views are on things like upcycling, second-hand purchases and supporting local businesses.

Personas

Hypotheses

By examining Kijiji’s existing user experience and interface we will be able to find more innovative and user-friendly features to improve the quality, detail and flow of the Post Ad feature. Second, by conducting a dive into current and potential Kijiji users we will be able to better understand the user’s journey through the interface to improve the user experience with multiple devices in mind. Third, by analyzing Kijiji’s similar competing buy and sell services we will be able to explore new and existing features to increase the conversion rate to prevent users dropping in the middle of the posting process.

High-level Overview

Goals

Kijiji is seeking to create a new online presence. This web presence provides Kijiji users with an ability to search and purchase products through private sales conducted online, as well as other services and content through the site. The goals of our Kijiji UX Design project are:

  • to understand the varying usage scenarios Kijiji users go through

  • to increase the conversion rate so that fewer users drop in the middle of the Post Ad process

  • to enhance the user’s flow to improve the quality and components of the ads submitted through the interface

Plan

Project Approach

Our process during this UX Design project will include four parts:

  • Plan

  • Define

  • Develop

  • Extend

During the Plan process, we will explore a number of suitable research methodologies.

Methodologies

The methodologies include, but are not limited to:

  • Analytics audit

  • Content audit

  • Information architecture

  • Competitor analysis

  • Personas

  • Usage scenarios

  • Surveys

  • Usability testing

  • Recruitment

  • Wireframing

  • Prototype

  • A/B testing

Next, we will define the efforts that will take place in each phase of our approach.

The business goals and user needs will be defined and Kijiji will sign off for approval. The research methodologies will be defined and will also need to be signed off by Kijiji for approval. Meetings will be held between Pamela Obre Co. and Kijiji bi-weekly or when updates are needed.

Tools

The following tools will be used for the research process, but are not limited to:

  • Tableau analytics

  • Google analytics

  • Content Audit Template by Content Strategy Inc.

  • Microsoft Excel

  • Microsoft Powerpoint

  • Adobe InDesign

  • Adobe Illustrator

  • Adobe Xd/Sketch/Figma

  • Usertesting.com

  • Surveymonkey.com

We will conduct audits for site content and analytics using Google, Content Audit Template, where the data will be visualized using Tableau and Excel. The content audit will yield useful insights from existing Information Architecture. Personas will be generated using data from the audits and created using InDesign. A competitor analysis will be done, with any existing sites and apps who share the same buy & sell feature as Kijiji. We will focus on what makes their UI features effective. We may explore beyond digital platforms, if needed. A survey will be implemented using Surveymonkey.com into the existing Kijiji site to gain insight into user needs, goals and painpoints. If more data is needed, recruiting for usability testing will be done.

The design part of the process will then begin. These insights will then be used to create usage scenarios, to understand user behaviours. These will be visualized in InDesign. Wireframes will be created using Xd/Sketch/Figma. Once we have gained enough insight, the data will be analyzed and presented through Powerpoint. Prototypes will be created using Xd/Sketch/Figma. A/B testing will be conducted if needed to compare different variations of prototypes.

Once outcomes are created, we will conduct testing. Usability testing will be done using Usertesting.com. Prototypes will be tested in-person by volunteers or digitally onsite by volunteers and/or users. Feedback will be taken in-person or through a survey online using Surveymonkey.com.

With that said, further refinement and testing will be done accordingly. Meetings will be planned as the project pans out, where the newfound data will be presented in a simple, digestible manner.

Principles of the Process

All design should be simple and intuitive.

  • The use of design will be minimalistic and easy to understand, regardless of user’s experience with technology, skills, or concentration levels. The design will always be motivated by the user in-mind. Each design decision will be motivated by a purpose.

All design should be diverse.

  • The design will accommodate to a vast range of individual preferences and abilities.

All design should be easy to use.

  • The design will be used efficiently and will place the lowest cognitive load on the user without compromising function or aesthetics. The design will be comfortable and will not be exhausting.

All design should be familiar.

  • The design will not introduce foreign elements. The design will not confuse and force users to learn a new ability.

All design should be perceivable.

  • The design will communicate information effectively to the user, regardless of their sensory abilities.
